How Much Does Your Newborn Need?

How Much Does Your Newborn Need?

6 pairs of diapers, 5 sets of linens, 4 pairs of bottles, 3 rubber binkies, 2 blankets and a partridge in a pear tree!

You’d think this to be just about right when shopping for a newborn.

After all, it’s no secret that it takes a small arsenal of products to provide the love and care they need.

But is this list really all you need? Do you perhaps require more or should you cut down on the baby-care list you’ve complied after spending hours on the internet?

Here’s the truth of it all…

You Don’t Need Everything and the Kitchen Sink to Take Care of Your Little One

According to a survey by BabyCenter, parents spend around $10,000 on their baby’s first year alone. The financial stress of which overwhelms many parents. To counter this stress, we offer this list of all the products we think your newborn needs. Use this to cut down on any non-essentials you might have on your list.

Newborn Baby Care List – What You Need

  • Baby clothes – They must vary in size, depending on your newborn’s average size:
  • One piece suits (5-7)
  • Bodysuits and shirts (5-7)
  • Stretchy pants (5-7)
  • Outer layers i.e. sweaters, sweatshirts, jackets (2-3)
  • Hats and mittens
  • Socks and Booties
  • Sleep suits

There is no need to buy shoes. Experts state that making your baby wear shoes at such a developmental stage may interfere with their growth.

  • Diapers– Although disposable diapers are readily available, more parents are now buying newborn cloth diapers. Reusable, made from eco-friendly material and hypoallergenic, these diapers work well for babies with sensitive skin.
  • Wipes – Disposable wipes can be used, although you may also use a washcloth and some warm water instead.
  • Changing table or disposable mats
  • Baby Gear – You only need three main pieces of equipment during the first year of your baby’s life:
  • Baby carrier
  • Baby stroller
  • Car seat – car seat is mandatory
  • Feeding– All the items below aren’t just for the baby’s ease but for the parent as well. They include:
  • Nursing pillow
  • Disposable nursing pads (6-12)
  • Lanolin ointment
  • Burp cloths (6-12)
  • Bottles (4-5)
  • Breast pump
  • Bottle brushes
  • Sleep essentials – You may not want to buy a crib right away. You could choose to use a bassinet instead. But as the baby starts growing and moving, you’ll need to have a crib set up, just in case they start rolling around and crawling early. Other items you’ll need include:
  • Bedding (No bumpers, pillows, extra quits)
  • Blankets (Preferably Sherpa fleece) These may also be used as swaddling blankets
  • Bathing– Be very careful when buying bathing products. Even if the formula for those products is mild, your baby might be allergic to one or two natural ingredients as well. Bathing essentials include:
  • Towels (2-3)
  • Soap and Shampoo
  • Body oil and lotion
  • Cotton buds
  • Bathtub
  • Washcloth
